A leaderboard for kickboxing classes

Fitness classes that generate live performance data often use a leaderboard to create friendly competition. The brief: design a two-screen experience — a large television display for the leaderboard, and a phone app for opting in and choosing a public identity. I chose kickboxing, a class type nobody had built this for.
Research and competitive analysis
I started with how fitness classes work and what makes them exciting. Several rounds of competitive analysis, videos of different class formats, and interviews with friends who attend them.

Why kickboxing
Competition drives attendance. People in competitive groups went to 90% more classes than those who weren't, because as people are influenced by those around them, everyone's activity level rises.
Cycling classes had this figured out: lighting, sound, visuals and gamification combining into an experience people come back for. Kickboxing had none of it, and carries misconceptions — that it's intimidating, that it builds a masculine body, that it's only for fighters. It burns more calories than cycling in less time. It was the untapped one.
What the screen has to do
Smart bags can track how hard and how often someone hits, and a wearable can cover the cardio side. The constraint is attention: someone mid-combination has a fraction of a second to absorb anything on screen.
